Ben and Kelli from Surf Esteem are passionate about sharing their knowledge and love of the ocean and exploration. Find out more about them.
In 2004, Ben and Kelli opened a surf shop called Surf Esteem in Aldinga Beach. Since then, they’ve been helping locals find good vibes and good rides, by stocking a range of surf clothing, accessories, and equipment. Their Aldinga Beach store has been so loved by the community, that last year they were able to expand to two stores — the second being right here in Castle Plaza.
Now, Ben and Kelli don’t just talk the talk, they walk the walk and know exactly what you need to enhance your ocean and exploration experiences. So, what staple pieces does Kelli recommend for the year?
“Board shorts in summer to surf in. A wetsuit in Autumn and winter to keep me warm, and a lighter wetsuit in spring (AKA a springsuit).” Hm, we get the impression they really like to surf. Kelli’s accessory of choice is also a good surf watch. “They’re stylish and functional. You won’t be late for work or miss the right tide time to surf.”
When it comes to outdoor fashion, there’s always some pretty interesting fashion statements being made. A classic trend that Ben loves is the good old flanney. “It should be in everyone’s closet. Buy a nice one to go out in, and when it wears out, use it to go camping in.”
Here in Edwardstown, we’re lucky to not be too far from the coast. But for Kelli, she wouldn’t mind being able to travel again, so she could go on an epic surf trip outside of Australia. In fact, if she could only wear one outfit from Surf Esteem for the rest of her life, she’d choose one that gives that very impression.
“I’d wear shorts, a cute singlet, thongs and a cap. It means I’d currently be on and Indo-Pacific surf trip.” Ah, we can only dream.
For a delicious meal in the Centre, Ben likes to visit Subway, and Kelli heads to Kokoro Sushi Tram. When we asked what their favourite event to get dressed up for is, by this point, we knew the answer!
“Surfing,” Ben said. “There’s nothing like putting on a wetty for a surf with mates!”
Ben and Kelli love seeing the brands they stock support emerging artists and athletes through collaborated styles and ranges — just like we love when our community supports local stores like theirs. So, if you’re ever in need of some surf gear, outdoor attire, or just have some questions, make sure you visit Ben and Kelli at Surf Esteem. You’ll be supporting a small, family-owned business.
